The Center for Book Arts was founded in 1974 by Richard Minsky as the first organization in the nation devoted to the art of the book. The Center is a hybrid gallery/studio/hub of artistic and social activity, dedicated to promoting the book as a contemporary art object, and keeping alive the traditional practices of bookmaking. We mount exhibitions, teach classes, host lectures, readings, and performances, as well as offer opportunities for artists to expand their knowledge of the book as an art object.
A central part of what we do is providing access and opportunities for artists, both to equipment and to technical knowledge and expertise. We have two residency programs for emerging artists here at the Center; one focusing on emerging artists working in various media who have not worked with bookmaking before; the other is for artists who are already committed to and experienced with the book format. Both programs are year-long immersions in the community here at the Center. Residents take classes, learn from experts in the field, use the facilities for their own projects, and experiment with new forms and techniques.
We receive crucial funding from public and private sources in order to be able to give our residents stipends and a budget to make their work, but the funding we currently have doesn’t cover the overhead costs of the program. The eight year-long residencies cost roughly $80,000 annually. This includes an average cost of $3,000 per resident for classes ALONE. Classes and workspace are the core of the residents experience, and we need to raise funds to cover these expenses.
Since 2001, over 60 artists have had residencies here. Many of these artists have gone on to win recognition and important support from other organizations like NYFA, Creative Capital, Printed Matter and the New Museum. The work they have produced here has been featured in exhibitions both here and abroad. The artists that work with us are generally in the earlier stages of their career, and this experience often proves to be a crucial opportunity to develop their work and career in a highly competitive context. We need your help in order to continue to support artists to further the art of the book in the future. Please make a donation and/or spread the word!

One limited edition letterpress print by a past artist resident:
There is a choice of 3 different prints; by Wayne Hodge, Carlos Motta and Catarina Leitao.
Wayne’s print ‘Android Market’ is a two-color print in an edition of 75 and measures 11.25” x 14.75”.
Catarina’s print is in an Edition of 50, in black ink on white paper, and measures 29.5x39cm.
Carlos’ print is a two-color print in an Edition of 20, and measures 21.5 x 28.5 cm. It is of a fictional cover of the serial publication, The Economist that depicts an image of George W. Bush.
3-hour hands-on workshop for WeDidIt backers:
The workshop will give a hands-on introduction to either hand bookbinding or the basics of letterpress printing in our fully equipped studios. In the first you will make 1-2 books, in the second you will set type and produce a small printed item. This workshop will be scheduled after participants are confirmed and will take your availability into account.

The Center for Book Arts is dedicated to preserving the traditional artistic practices of book-making, as well as exploring and encouraging contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object. Founded in 1974, it was the first not-for-profit organization of its kind in the nation, and has since become a model for others around the world. It's work is channeled through five program areas: exhibitions related to the arts of the book; lectures on topics of interest to book artists and craftspeople; a modest publication schedule; services to artists, both established and emerging; and an extensive offering of classes.
